Boogie was an underground R&B style prevalent in the early to mid 80s which gradually replaced Disco. In it's pure form it was usually based on a steady, chugging 4/4 beat with a good melody and soulful vocals. Concentrating on the groove, boogie was essentially a bass led rhythm with subtle chords, irresistible hooks and rattling breaks, often layered with funky swirling guitar and keyboard riffs. The groove was hypnotic and infectious making the genre hot in the upfront clubs. Although a distinctive style in it's own right, Boogie is used to describe quite a wide range of styles from that period.
