Rare Groove is by definition music of a high quality, scarce or left-field. Tracks that attain rare groove status can originate from virtually any of the music styles featured on this site and from any era. The phrase was first coined in the mid 80s and since then there have been rare groove 'booms' in styles such as 70s funk and mellow grooves. Often misused as a description for club classics, rare groove is usually initiated by the more knowledgeable DJs and can also result from current trends. Many tracks came to prominence in this way which were originally little known or overlooked.
